Resilience

Ever wonder how is that some people can be hit hard in life, have hardships that seem like they would have the power to end their world and their life and yet they overcome it in the most amazing and inexplicable ways? The leave us with admiration, and sometimes even thinking, “I don’t know what I would do if that happened to me…”

Flash news: these people are no different than you and me, they are as human as all of us. No superpowers…well, unless you call RESILIENCE a superpower.

Resilience is defined as the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change (Webster dictionary); the capacity to recovery quickly from difficulties.

Doesn’t that sound quite simple? The ability to recover from misfortune or change…many people may think special training is needed to achieve such state. The reality is the every single one of us has resilience within. I am pretty sure you have been able to tap into in at some point in your life.

Think about resilience as if you are trapped in a hole or in a maze and you have no other way to move other than to go forward, as if going backwards or staying in the same place is not an option…the only option is to move forward no matter what.  Being against the wall, with nowhere else to go but forward, finding ourselves in a position of weakness, vulnerability, defeat…knowing that you are unable to stay put and do nothing, that is what gives you the opportunity to look at resilience in the eye and accept the challenge!

Now, it is human nature to make up excuses and not want to change, not want to take on the step forward and walk away of what’s holding you back or even try to justify that it is better not to do anything, or better yet, that it is better to stay the same because “eventually, everything will be ok” or because “nothing will change”.  This is truly a normal process, simply because our brain is ‘wired’ a certain way and will not automatically switch gears to something we are not used to, it is easier to go along with what we know than the unknown. We love habits and resist change.

Every single one of us has the power to be resilient and overcome what is holding us back. To break free of the chains that have us stuck.  Understand, we can be resilient in many ways, both in life-threatening situations and in our everyday lives to include, and most importantly, emotionally speaking.  You see, the power you experience when you are resilient, when you break free of the chains that hold you back is unmeasurable! This power is what allows to see the light at the end of the tunnel, is what propels you to go forward and believe you have what it takes to take on the challenge ahead!

You have the power to build and strengthen your resilience, in fact while every single one of us has that power, what differentiates us is that some are more in touch with it than others. Can you imagine yourself with that strength? Can you imagine yourself with that will power? What would you conquer? How would your life be?

Here are tips that would help strengthening resilience:

  • Work on your perspective
  • Build that positive belief in yourself
  • Build your social network
  • Establish goals
  • Take care of yourself
  • Embrace change

Amazing huh? Yes!! You have that power, you ARE resilient, you CAN overcome what holds you back physically and emotionally!!! I invite you to take on the challenge, and work on these areas, one small step at a time. Every single one of these tips will bring you closer to uncover YOUR POWER. Before you realize, you will look at yourself in the mirror and see a totally different person!
